How to Prepare for an International Bus Trip

Return to blog

An international bus trip can be comfortable and enjoyable if you prepare for it properly. In this article, we have gathered proven tips to help you pack for the road and make your journey as comfortable as possible.

Documents: What You Must Take

The most important thing for an international trip is to prepare all the necessary documents in advance. The mandatory minimum includes a passport (check the expiration date - it must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of travel),  and medical travel insurance.

For trips to Romania and Bulgaria, additional documents may be required: a visa (for citizens of certain countries), an invitation, a hotel reservation, or a return ticket confirmation. We recommend checking the current requirements before your trip.

What to Bring on the Bus

Properly packed hand luggage will make a long trip much more comfortable. Here is a list of things we recommend taking with you:

  • A neck pillow and a blanket for comfortable rest during a night trip
  • A charger and headphones for your phone or tablet
  • A bottle of water and light snacks (nuts, dried fruits, cookies)
  • Wet wipes and personal hygiene items
  • A warm sweater or hoodie (it can be chilly in the bus due to the air conditioning)
  • A book, magazine, or downloaded movies on your device

Preparing for Border Crossing

During international trips, the bus goes through border control, which takes from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on how busy the checkpoint is. Keep your documents handy, not in the luggage compartment. Be ready to answer the border guards' questions about the purpose of your trip and your place of residence.

Luggage and Valuables

Most carriers allow one piece of luggage weighing up to 20 kg, which is placed in the luggage compartment, and one piece of hand luggage. Always keep your valuables, money, and documents with you in your hand luggage. We also recommend taking photos of all important documents and saving them in cloud storage in case of loss.

Route Planning

Study the route and the schedule of stops in advance. Find out if there are scheduled stops for food and rest, and calculate the approximate time of arrival. If someone is meeting you at your destination, keep in mind possible delays at the border. Save the carrier's contact phone number in case of unforeseen situations.
