Border Crossing Rules: What Passengers Need to Know

Return to blog

Crossing the state border is a part of every international bus trip. This process can take anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours, depending on the workload of the checkpoint, the time of day, and the number of passengers. To make sure everything goes smoothly, it is important to know the rules and requirements in advance.

Passport Control

When crossing the border, every passenger goes through passport control twice: upon exiting one country and upon entering another. Border guards check the validity of the passport, the presence of necessary visas or the right to visa-free entry, and may also ask questions about the purpose of the trip, place of residence, and the planned return date.

Make sure your international passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of planned entry into the country. Some countries require at least two blank pages for stamps.

Customs Control

Customs control involves checking the belongings and goods you are transporting across the border. There are restrictions on the import and export of certain categories of goods:

  • Alcoholic beverages: usually no more than 1-2 liters per person (depending on the country)
  • Tobacco products: 2 packs
  • Currency: amounts exceeding 10,000 euros must be declared
  • Food products: meat and dairy products may be prohibited from import
  • Medications: prescription drugs must be carried with a doctor's prescription

Specifics of Different Borders

Romania and Bulgaria (EU Countries)

When entering Romania and Bulgaria, European Union rules apply. For citizens of Ukraine, there is a visa-free regime for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. A biometric international passport is required. Border guards may request confirmation of hotel reservations, a return ticket, and proof of sufficient financial means.

Tips for Fast Border Crossing

Keep your passport and all documents in an easily accessible place. Do not put them in the luggage compartment. Fill out an immigration card in advance if one is required. Answer border guards' questions clearly and calmly. Do not take photos at the border checkpoint. Follow the instructions of the driver and border service officers.
